About the Show ||General Facts

Aside from being adopted you wouldn't think that Max (Jason Behr, Dawson's Creek, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Isabel (Katherine Heigl, Law & Order), and Michael (Brendan Fehr,Millenium) were any different from any other teenager growing up in the small town of Roswell, New Mexico but there is more to them that meets the eye.

Max, Michael, and Isabel were sent to earth during the reported July 1947 UFO crash. They left the incubation pods when they were six years old assumed "normal" human form and were found and adopted by local Roswell families. They don't know where they came from, they don't know what they are, and they don't know what the future will hold for them.

Shy and sweet, Max Evans has a heart of gold. He also happens to be in love with Liz Parker. When Max witnesses Liz getting shot at the Crashdown Cafe one afternoon, he reacts without thinking about the consequences. He heals Liz with his supernatural powers and opens up a can of worms never to be closed again.

Michael is best friends with Max and Isabel is not a people person. When they broke out of the incubation pods Michael hid behind a rock while Max and Isabel joined hands and faced their future. They were adopted into a the loving Evans family but Michael wasn't so lucky. Adopted by an alcoholic who lives in a traveler park and collects welfare checks, Michael is often abused and is not loved by his adoptive father. As a result Michael longs to return to wherever they came from and has no interest in living on Earth.

Beautiful, popular and bold, Isabel exudes grace and condidence and she is not afraid to use her powers whenever she feels like it. Isabel is also very warm and loving to both Max and Michael as well as her "earth family." She wants to find answers about them almost as Michael does but she differs in that she embraces Earth and the love and acceptance it offers her.

Liz Parker (Shiri Appleby, Xena: Warrior Princess) is your All-American girl next door. She's a good student, she's a good friend and she has a job working at her father's Crashdown Cafe. She also has the attention of two of Roswell's hotties, her boyfriend Kyle Valenti and her secret, alien admirer Max Evans. And when Max saves her life Liz immediately feels a deep connection with Max even though Max has asked that they be friends only her heart yearns for so much more.

Maria DeLuca (Majandra Delfino, Politically Incorrect and Alex Whitman (Colin Hanks, Band Of Brothers are Liz Parker's best friends and the only other two people let in on the secret about Max, Michael, and Isabel being aliens. Maria DeLuca is sassy, brassy, and opinionated and she and Liz are nearly inseparable. They work together, they socialize together at school and after school and she is the first one to notice that Liz is not being entirely truthful about the shooting. Alex is kind and loyal which makes him a very good friend to have. Alex knows that Liz and Maria are keeping something from him and when he learns the truth he is amazed and promises to keep the secret. It didn't hurt that he has a major crush on Isabel Evans.

During the series while the six teenagers struggle with human alien dynamics as well as the romances and attractions of Max and Liz, Michael and Maria, and Isabel and Alex. They also have to deal with the growing suspicions of Sheriff Valenti, the FBI and even their parents. Will the find the answers they seek? Who can they trust? Will they ever find their way home?

General Roswell Facts

  • Executive producer Jonathan Frakes appears on-screen near the end of the first episode. He is the man on stage that announces the crash of the UFO. He appears twice more as himself, once as a guest speaker in the season one episode "The Convention," and another in the season three episode "Secrets and Lies" where he holds a casting audition for Max on the show "Enterprise" (2001).

  • Fearing cancellation during the show's first season, fans of Roswell sent tiny bottles of Tabasco sauce (the choice condiment of the show's aliens) to the WB network as part of a campaign to save the show. Roswell was subsequently moved to a new night and time and renewed for a second season.

  • Heath Ledger auditioned for the role of Max Evans.

  • Katherine Heigl tested for all three female leads before landing the part of Isabel Evans. Before winning the role of Maria DeLuca, Majandra Delfino originally auditioned for the part of Liz, which eventually went to Shiri Appleby who, like Heigl, tested for all three female lead roles, winning the lead of Liz Parker after several callbacks.

  • The newspaper clippings shown at the beginning of the show's credits are actual headlines from the infamous Roswell "UFO Crash" in July of 1947.

  • The mountain where alien-children came from (and frequently go back to) is the same as the mountain Captain Kirk climbs in an episode of "Star Trek" (1966); it was also used in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991), as the mountain to which Bill & Ted are brought to be killed by the evil robots and in _Fastlane (2002)_ where Van and Deq go to meet with an arms dealer (and their car is shot with a rocket launcher).

  • During the opening credits of the show, the names of the stars come up on the screen, first in "alien writing," and then morph into English.

  • In the third season episode "Secrets and Lies," after doing terribly on an audition for "Enterprise" (2001), Max's agent tells him that "There's still 'Buffy'," a reference to Jason Behr's guest appearance as Ford in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Lie to Me (#2.7)" (1997). Also, Julie Benz, Who plays Agent Tapolski, plays Darla on Buffy.

  • The pilot episode was the highest-testing episode 20th Century Fox had ever done.

  • Though the name given to the alien Nasedo is purported on the show to be an Indian word for "visitor," it was actually made up by show co-executive producer and writer Thania St. John by scrambling the letters of the town of Sedona, Arizona.

  • Majandra Delfino was nicknamed Majandra because one of her siblings couldn't pronounce her real name, "Maria Alejandra".

  • Nick Wechsler auditioned for 4 different roles.

  • They didn't even use real tobacco sauce. Instead, it was V8 Berry Splash. They tried to use real Tabasco sauce, but their eyes kept watering and they kept running for more water after each take.
